Cows
Holstein-Friesian
Hi, Cow Fans
For the next few days we will be discussing the Holstein Cow.
This breed is one of the oldest, of either beef or dairy animals in America. It had its beginnings in the Netherlands, mainly in the North-East province, Friesland, and is unquestionably the same which made the Hollanders famous throughout the civilized world more than a thousand years ago. Even back during the flourishing days of the old Roman Empire, large, black and white oxen, and cheese were continually being sent from the regions now known as the Netherlands. A race of cattle with many of the present characteristics of the Holstein-Friesians doubtless were being maintained practically pure fully 20000 years ago and Holland has remained famous as a dairy centre during the centuries since.Â

A Dairy Farm Where Milk and Manure Pay the Bills
Hi, Cow Fans
The cows at the Audet family’s Blue Spruce Farm make nearly 9,000 gallons of milk a day—and about 35,000 gallons of manure.
It’s long been the milk that pays, but now the Audets have figured out how to make the manure pay as well. They’re using it—actually, the methane that comes from it—to generate electricity.

Dairy Cows satisfy sweet tooth
Hi, Cow Fans
Yes, cows are doing a good thing again. Besides satisfying their own sweet tooth, they are diverting tons of organic material from organic wate dumps.

Mastitis
Hi, Milk People
Mastitis occurs when harmful bacteria enter the cow’s udder through the teat canal. Usually only one or two quarters are infected(cow has four quarters/parts to her udder).
Mastitis lowers milk production and the cow can become ill and die from it.
Cows get infected by other cows, the environment, like manure, soil and water.
Mastitis can be controlled by cleaning the udder before and after milking, by cleaning the equipment, by feeding the cows well and treating sick cows before things get out of hand.

Cow Breeds : Solids Content
Hi, Milkfans
Here’s some quick dairy-info on breeds and their milksolids ratios to volume. In South Africa the main breeds are : Jersey – Guernsey – Ayrshire – Friesen. They display a decrease in milksolids and a corresponding increase in volume of production from left to right.
There may be some overlap in figures between individual cows and herds, but the above is generally accepted to be the case.
Goodday to you,
